Project MeshAtlantic - discovery of new polychaete species
The project MeshAtlantic contributes to the discovery of new polychaete species in the Portuguese Continental Shelf.
The Researchers of the University of Aveiro/CESAM Ana Rodrigues, Victor Quintino e Roberto Martins discovered four new species of Polychaetes in samples collected along the Portuguese Continental Shelf. The species belong to the Lumbrineridae family and were named as Lumbrineris lusitanica, distributed along the western and southern Portuguese shelf; L. pinaster e L. luciliae more restricted to the southern shelf and Gallardoneris iberica also distributed mainly along the southern areas of the shelf. The genus Gallardoneris was only known for the Pacific being this the first time to be referred for the Atlantic. The work was developed in cooperation with Luis Carrera-Parra from ECOSUR, México – an international recognized specialist for the taxonomy of the Lumbrineridae family. The results from this research will appear soon in the international journal Zootaxa.
The project aims to promote harmonised production and use of marine habitat maps covering the Atlantic Area. To reach this goal, it intends to adapt and enhance previous achievements to the area, hence bringing the region into equal footing with northern Europe.
